Chapter 18
Strator Klaso
âThatâs a lot of ships,â Taruk said, as we both looked out the window of my dorm room.
The training grounds were full of small transport ships that would take all the first terms to the location of the field training exercise. They were small, which meant we were probably either staying on this planet or going to the next closest one away.
I straightened my tactical uniform. It used to be my primary uniform for work, but since we had been at the academy, we only wore our dress uniforms. It was strange being back in the old ones. But they were significantly more comfortable, and they were designed for field use.
âAre you ready?â I asked Taruk.
It was a rhetorical question. We werenât supposed to bring anything except ourselves and our uniforms. This was to simulate as if we actually had just jumped into an escape pod. There wouldnât be extra baggage or anything else a normal officer wouldnât be carrying.
Both Taruk and I both had watches, and Taruk sewed some additional ripcord into our uniforms that might come in handy. We also each had small multi-use tools. Weâd see what we could get away with. Besides all that, we ate our weight in food earlier that morning.
Taruk nodded, and we headed out of the dorm room. All the other first terms were heading out to the grounds as well.
As we walked from the path to the grassy training grounds, I kept an eye out for Lawrence. She said she would meet us out there.
Despite her small stature, she wasnât hard to find. It seemed I could find her anywhere. She was smiling, but I knew her well enough to know that was a fake smile plastered on her face. If I closed closely, I knew I would see her hands trembling. She was nervous. So was I.
Instructors started yelling at us to get organized into our group numbers, and others started loading us onto ships. It seemed there wouldnât be any waiting around.
âHowâs Kaâala?â Taruk asked.
âShe seemed fine this morning. But she left early to meet up with her group.â
It was a shame Kaâala wouldnât be with us, but there was nothing we could do about that.
We stood where we were instructed until someone told us to get on the ship with the tail number two-three-two.
As we approached, I saw we wouldnât be the only ones on board.
Fuck.
Three Audhuses were already on the ship and were being checked over by a female instructor. I only knew one by name, Quen. He was a piece of work. Were we going to be dropped off at the same location?
He smirked when he saw me, and Taruk and I shared a glance. It would be trouble if we were going to have to deal with him, too. I only vaguely recognized the other two. I didnât know if they were going to be a problem or not.
âAlright, you three,â the instructor said as she approached us. âLose the jackets so I can give you a quick once over.
